M1200 Armored Knight

The M1200 Armored Knight is a precision targeting system designed primarily to fix targets for field artillery units and to support Combat Observation Laser Team (COLT) missions in both Heavy and Infantry Brigade Combat teams. Textron is starting to deliver armored vehicles fitted with the sensor package to help field artillerymen achieve highly accurate, pinpoint strikes. Nearly 60 M1200 Armored Knights will be delivered to the U.S. Army in the next two years.

According to Defense News, the Knight sensor package includes “a laser designator and laser rangefinder, along with a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) receiver, thermal imaging and digital command-and-control systems, allowing the system to precisely locate targets from several kilometers away.”

Replacing the vehicles currently used by COLT, the M1200 Armored Knight uses two types of munitions, laser-designated or target location munitions, to produce an extremely accurate designator of the target or a “precise grid location on the ground so the artillery has a precise point to fire to” (Defense News). This is the first time armored vehicles will be equipped with a laser system that can designate targets for laser guided ordnances and conventional munitions.

The M1200 also carries an improvised explosive device (IED) suppression system intended to jam remote triggering signals for IEDs.
