Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System (AFATDS)

Since the beginning of operations in Iraq in 2003, one of the technologies contributing to the timeliness and responsiveness of fire support delivered by the Field Artillery is the Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System (AFATDS). AFATDS coordinates the use of land, air and sea-based indirect fire systems to support maneuver operations.

One media report published shortly after operations began in 2003 said AFATDS “prevented friendly fire accidents, provided additional protection to friendly forces, and created significant savings in weapon systems and ammunition costs. Overall, the AFATDS has become an integral part of the Army and Marine Corps command and control (C2) network- centric architecture — delivering devastating and accurate fires at the right place and right time.”

Click here to learn more about AFATDS and how it is proving to be a key transformational agent as the Army moves to a modular force structure.
