V2C2: Variable Volume Chamber Cannon

BAE Systems, in partnership with the U.S. Army's Watervliet Arsenal and Benet Laboratories, ARL and ARDEC, has created the revolutionary 105-mm Variable Volume Chamber Cannon. This novel howitzer uses a variable volume breech to fire 105-mm ammunition using the 155-mm Modular Artillery Charge System (MACS) propellant.

More than 230 rounds have been fired from the V2C2 at a testing facility near Elk River, Minn. The V2C2 is designed to:

  • Provide the U.S. Artillery an American-designed option for a new 105-mm artillery system that can achieve ranges of 30 km.
  • Give U.S. ground forces greater indirect fire support capability and flexibility.
  • Significantly reduce acquisition costs by using an existing propellant system.
  • Significantly reduce the artillery logistics burden by having only one kind of propellant in the inventory.

The efficiency, range and logistics benefits of the V2C2 make the system ideal for meeting U.S. light force artillery requirements.
